Australian website Sensis says that 69% of the Australian people are using social media. As said before, Australia counts 24,598,187 people. This means that about 16,972,749 people use social media with Facebook as the most used social networking site. 16 million Australians that use social media use Facebook. They are followed by Instagram with 5 million users and LinkedIn with 4 million users.

For the Dutch it is slightly different according to Emerce. WhatsApp is for us the number one with 10.9 million users followed by 10.4 million people on Facebook. That means that in the Netherlands 64% of the population uses WhatsApp, while in Australia it is only a small percentage.

While emailing with my pen pal from Australia, I noticed that even though I had put my mobile number in the e-mail I sent him, he contacted me through Direct Messaging on Instagram. Later I heard from a friend that most of our pen pals don’t have WhatsApp.
